Spanish Talent in Isle of Dogs

Friday 22th February / 16.30 h. La Llotja. Hall Leandre Cristòfol

On many occasions, local talent is not a prophet in its own land and ends up travelling all around the world. And in the world of stop motion, we can find the stellar work of animators like César Díaz Meléndez and Sergio Lara, or set and model makers like Cristina Acuña and Sonia Iglesias. All of them worked together on Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs (2018) and they will share their experiences and talk about their international career as a creative zigzag.

Madrid-born César Díaz Meléndez has 25 years of experience as an animator specialised in stop motion in all its forms: puppets, objects, clay, pixilation or sand animation, a technique with which he has created numerous short films such as Zepo (2014). César has worked on commercial and cult feature films such as ParaNorman (2012) by Laika studio, Frankenweenie (2012) by Tim Burton, Anomalisa (2015) by Charlie Kaumfan, My Life as a Zucchini (2016) by Claude Barras, or Isle of Dogs (2018) by Wes Anderson. His latest short film ‒ Muedra (2019), stop motion animation in natural landscapes‒ will have its world premiere in Animac 2019.

It was in Anomalisa where César first worked with Sergio Lara: this Valencian animator trained in Barcelona has worked on local productions such as Clay Kids by Javier Tostado and, after his work in Los Angeles and London, he’s now working as a stop motion animator for the Valencia-based TV production The Diary of Bita and Cora, also present in Animac 2019.

The Galician Cristina Acuña trained and worked in sculpture restoration to then made a leap into the world of stop motion as a set dresser, scenic painter, and set and prop maker. She has worked on productions like O Apostolo (2012) by Fernando Cortizo, My Life as a Zucchini (2016) and Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) by Laika studio.

Galicia-born Sonia Iglesias is a model maker specialised in stop motion armatures, and she has also worked on feature films like O Apostolo (2011), Frankenweenie (2012), Pirates! (2012) by Aardman Animations and My Life as a Zucchini (2016).
