Masterclass Katariina Lillqvist. The great stoyteller

Finnish director, producer, screenwriter and journalist Katariina Lillqvist visits Animac with a suitcase full of stories imbued with pure and hard reality in a thrilling masterclass about her career as an artist as she’s been fighting since 1989 in Prague and Stockholm with socially and politically charged animated works.
Her films and projects explore the European mentality through war-time traumas and the minority viewpoint: the fate of the children of Sarajevo, the struggle of the Romani communities ‒ Lillqvist also cooperates with the Museum of Romani Culture in Brno ‒ or the vanishing of traditional and tribal cultures in her hometown Tampere during the Finnish Civil War… Her brilliant documentary Radio Dolores (2016) explores the fears and dreams of the antifascist movement in 1930s Tampere through the character of Arvo, a young shoemaker who disappears in the Spanish Civil War. In fact, it’s not the only project that hits home: A Train to Spain is Lillqvist’s travelling cross-media installation dedicated to the memory of Scandinavian volunteers who joined the Spanish Civil War to fight against fascism.
Chairperson of film co-operative Camera Cagliostro, producer in animation studio Mamiwata, and the driving force behind Lapinlahti Puppet Animation Museum in Finland, Lillqvist is an essential figure to understand auteur stop motion with a plurinational, pancultural vocation.
